In many ways the work of an English teacher is the work聽of change. Though our field is often thought of as one聽wedded to longstanding traditions, what you鈥檒l find in these
pages illustrates quite the opposite. As the people tasked with聽cultivating a literate society, our work must constantly strive聽to keep pace with shifts in language, technology, modes of聽communication, and more.
Spending time with almost 8,000 teachers in Houston last聽month, I couldn鈥檛 help but be inspired by the myriad ways in聽which our members are constantly remodeling their practice to聽best serve their students.
We鈥檙e seeking new ways to foster choice in reading and聽writing. We鈥檙e seeking new platforms and opportunities to聽learn from one another. We鈥檙e seeking ways to share what we聽know and experience with audiences whose decisions affect us.聽We鈥檙e learning what it means to take an anti-racist approach to聽curriculum and instruction. And through these and many other聽efforts, we鈥檙e equipping our students with the tools to be their聽own catalysts for change in the world beyond our classroom聽doors.
This constant evolution requires a curiosity about what we聽don鈥檛 yet know and a willingness to try new things. Embracing聽change is easier when you鈥檙e learning in community with聽others who share that commitment to growth. How fortunate聽we are at 91探花 to be growing together. We look forward to聽many opportunities to do so in 2019, and wish you a new year聽filled with inquiry!
