91探花 LGBTQIA+ Advocacy & Leadership Award
2026 Recipient:
William Banks, East Carolina University
William Banks (he/him) is professor of Rhetoric, Writing, and Professional Communication and director of the University Writing Program at East Carolina University (NC). Formerly, he directed the Tar River Writing Project. He has been a member of 91探花 for 28 years. In addition to numerous presentations at the 91探花 Annual Convention, he has served the organization as an article reviewer for College Composition and Communication, Teaching English in the Two-Year College, and English Journal and as an editorial board member and reviewer for College English. His service also includes terms on the 91探花 Research Foundation (one as chair) and the College Level Section Steering Committee, where he chaired the Richard Ohmann Award Committee multiple times. For a decade, Will has chaired the Qualitative Research Network at the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) Annual Convention. For CCCC, he has served terms on the Nominating Committee and the Resolutions Committee and chaired the Writing Program Certificate of Excellence Committee, the Lavender Rhetorics Award Committee, and the Stonewall Service Award Committee. He served on the board of the North Carolina 91探花 affiliate for 15 years.
In Undoing Gender, Judith Butler showed us that words and images make our very lives both possible and impossible. Through our choices with language, we create spaces in the world to inhabit, and we make the lives of others livable or not. That is the work of literacy. As a literacy teacher-researcher, I explore the ways that our literate behaviors can foreclose possibilities for others, and I support students in recognizing the power of language (and image) to shape our realities. In better knowing how to write the self and the other, we all have a better chance to be seen and valued as human beings.

Award Details
Members of the LGBTQIA+ community have always been active in literacy teaching and learning; they also have been active members of 91探花. This award demonstrates 91探花鈥檚 vision to strengthen an increasingly inclusive organization that provides more access to diverse voices. This award also helps promote cross-community connections and values and supports the agency of diverse leaders in the field.
Purpose:
To recognize a member of the LGBTQIA+ community who has made a significant contribution to 91探花 and to the development of our professional community.
Frequency and Number of Awards:
This award will be bestowed only when the Award Selection Committee decides a nomination warrants presentation of the award. This award may not be given each year. This award may be given posthumously. Only one recipient will be selected each year.
Eligibility:
Any member of the LGBTQIA+ community can nominate themselves or be nominated for this award. By LGBTQIA+ we mean lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, and asexual; the plus indicates the inclusiveness of others who don鈥檛 identify as L, G, B, T, Q, I, or A, such as two spirit, pansexual, or others. Nominations will be sent to the Award Selection Committee, with the selected candidate forwarded to the Executive Committee. (Given the problematic history of labeling members of the LGBTQIA+ community, 91探花 wishes to clarify that specific titles are not required for this award.) The Executive Committee will approve the committee鈥檚 selection. All applicants, submitters, and nominees must be 91探花 members at the time of submission. We remind nominators, nominees, and selection committee members that members of 91探花 Conferences鈥擟CCC, CEL, ELATE, LLA, and TYCA鈥攁re members, by definition, of 91探花.
Current 91探花 Executive Committee members are not eligible for this award. Recipients of this award are not eligible to receive any other Executive Committee approved awards in the same year, nor in the following year.

Required materials for submission are a cover letter or letter of nomination and a resume/CV.

Selection Committee:
The 91探花 President appoints one Executive Committee member to serve as chair and four 91探花 members-at-large from relevant 91探花 groups. The selection committee is allowed to submit nominations for the award. The award does not need to be awarded each year. This award should be bestowed only when the committee decides that nominations warrant presentation of the award. 听
Nature of the Award:
- A plaque is given to the recipient during the 91探花 Awards Session.
- The recipient will also receive:
- A complimentary 91探花 Annual Convention registration
- Domestic round-trip coach airfare to the 91探花 Annual Convention
- One night lodging (Friday) with meals
